Singing and Commitment

Cathedrals require high standards of singing from their own choirs and expect the same commitment to quality from visiting choirs. They represent the continuing musical traditions of the cathedral, abbey, minster or great churches where they are invited to sing. When we visit a cathedral we stay for a week and we expect singers to commit to as much of the week as possible. (Thursdays are always non-singing ‘Dumb’ days.)
Auditions
On our visits, complex choral music is often prepared and sung ‘on the day’. As we all come from different areas of the country, there is no opportunity to work together on material or be assessed before the visit, so strong sight-reading skills will be beneficial, though familiarity with cathedral repertoire or the ability to learn music quickly are just as valuable! If you are concerned about this, please feel able to contact us informally prior to applying to join. We would always welcome new singers to join us for a weekend where there is less music to learn. We are not able to send sheet music out to singers before our visits.
At a first visit, the Director may ask you to sing at a 1:1 meeting to assess the best options and positioning of your voice in the choir and as a potential soloist.
If you are interested in joining us, please provide details of your singing experience using the email address below.
