William Wingate Scholars

We offer ‘William Wingate’ scholarships to young people who would like to develop their skills in liturgical music by playing for and/or conducting cathedral services. William sang with the choir for many years and bequeathed the choir funds to set up scholarships for young people. The Cathedral Chamber Choir is delighted to continue this legacy and to work with aspirational student and early-career musicians.
Bursaries
We are a registered Educational charity (296212 ). As such, we can offer subsidies to some of our members, and provide a base for educating singers in their own development and appreciation of the English Choral Tradition. We can assist singers who, for financial reasons, could not otherwise take part in our visits and who are keen to learn more about the English choral tradition. William Wingate Fund Bursaries offer the next generation of singers the opportunity to inhabit this tradition within a supportive and encouraging environment.
“I thought I’d drop you a line to say thanks foreverything, you’ve all been very accommodating and generous to us newbies, andespecially me who before this week had never sung in an Anglican service, andhad never sung psalms or responses before. It was a really great opportunityfor me to get some experience being a choral scholar of sorts (that I wouldn’tget anywhere else), and I really enjoyed it! It has opened my mind to maybepursuing choral scholarships in the future for sure.” H.M. (Truro 2019)
“I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience of the Cathedral Chamber Choir at Winchester Cathedral. The range of music was stunning and everyone was very supportive. I appreciated the intense practice as I could take in everything advised by the director needed for the evening’s performance. It was a real privilege to perform in a cathedral and experience the amazing acoustics.” E.F. (Winchester 2018)
